Shawn Ganske

Rock & Tree Assistant

Shawn first began climbing in 2010 at the original Upper Limits indoor climbing gym in downtown St. Louis. After his first outdoor climbing trip to Jackson Falls, Illinois, he was immediately hooked. He has been assistant guiding with Vertical Voyages since 2022 and assists with  trips at the local crags throughout Missouri and Illinois.

Shawn is most inspired by watching new climbers—especially those who arrive with low confidence or a fear of heights—challenge themselves and discover what they’re capable of. Nothing is more rewarding to him than seeing a first-time climber smile and feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of a route. He is also motivated by the progress and enthusiasm of the children in Vertical Voyages’ school programs.

Shawn assists with both rock-climbing and tree-climbing programs. Outside of climbing, he enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and international travel. The red-rock landscapes of the desert Southwest bring him the most joy when he’s on the road.
