Rock & Tree Instructor
James Anderson has always had a deep love for the outdoors and adventure. While in college, he took a rappelling class offered by the Outdoor Adventure Resource Center, which sparked a lasting passion for climbing and rappelling. Growing up in central Illinois, where outdoor climbing opportunities are limited,
James began climbing regularly at a local indoor gym to continue developing his skills. As a former Boy Scout, James naturally gravitated toward youth outdoor programs when his own daughters became old enough to participate. He began volunteering with the Girl Scouts, initially supporting his own troop and later assisting other troops as well. He is actively involved in programs such as the Disabled Athletes Sports Association, Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, and several local school initiatives. Nearly every weekend, he can be found at camps or parks, sharing his enthusiasm for the outdoors with both youth and adults.
In 2016, James participated in a canopy climbing adventure with Vertical Voyages. The experience left a strong impression, and he offered to assist the organization whenever needed. Since 2017, he has been an active member of the Vertical Voyages team. James earned his rock-climbing AMGA Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) certification in 2023 adding another instructor role to his position with Vertical Voyages. James currently instructs at various locations throughout Missouri and Illinois. In his role as a tree climbing and rock climbing instructor, James finds inspiration in helping climbers discover their own strengths and capabilities.
