Overview

The SPI Assessment is the final step toward certification. It’s open to climbers who have completed the SPI Course and are ready to demonstrate competence in:

  • Climbing movement and instruction
  • Anchor building and transitions
  • Client safety and problem-solving
  • Risk and site management

The AMGA recommends 6-12 months of practice between course and assessment.

Prerequisites

  • Current member of the AMGA
  • Successfully completed an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course
  • Led a minimum of 40 traditional routes, most of which should be 5.6 and on a variety of rock types
  • Able to comfortably lead 5.6 traditional routes which means you place protection.
  • Able to comfortably climb 5.8 on top rope

You do not need First Aid training to take the course or assessment. However, it is your responsibility to hold appropriate medical certification for the location that you are working in.

About the SPI Certification

The AMGA Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) Program is the only nationally recognized certification for single-pitch climbing instruction in the U.S. This two-part program helps climbers become effective, responsible instructors in a single-pitch environment.
