Green’s Cave Adventures

Adventure Hike & Rappel

Offered Mid October – Mid April
Meramec State Park, Missouri

Discover Missouri's Hidden Wilderness & History

Join us on a unique guided adventure through Miller Hollow to the dramatic limestone cliffs above Green’s Cave. This 5.3-mile round-trip journey combines rugged hiking, rich Ozark history, and the unforgettable experience of a 110-foot free-hanging rappel over the stunning Green Cave amphitheater.

What to Expect on the Adventure

  • Distance: 5.6 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: ~450 feet
  • Rappel Height: 110 ft (free-hanging)
  • Start Time: 8:30 AM
  • End Time: 4:00 – 5:30 PM (varies by group pace)
  • Meeting Point: Meramec State Park Visitor Center

Our adventure begins with a 2.5-mile hike through scenic glades, steep ravines, and wooded ridgelines. Along the way, we’ll explore the remnants of 1930s–1940s Missouri homesteads, built during the lead mining boom that once shaped this remote stretch of the Ozarks.

These stone foundations and weathered structures speak to a time when resilient families lived deep in the backcountry—raising livestock, working mineral-rich land, and carving out a life in Missouri’s wilderness.

The hike ends atop Green’s Cave bluff, a commanding viewpoint offering sweeping vistas of the Meramec River valley and surrounding farmland. After a safety briefing and gear-up session, you’ll rappel off the bluff, descending into the mouth of Green’s Cave—cool, shaded, and perfect for lunch before hiking back.

About the Area

Green’s Cave lies hidden in the rugged hills of the Meramec Highlands—part of the northern Ozarks. Historically, this area was settled in the early 20th century by miners and subsistence farmers. The region’s remote terrain preserved its wild character and cultural relics, making this hike not just a physical adventure, but a passage through time
